Racism In the US – the Working Group on Racisim

The Working Group on Racism, a subcommittee of the Ministry and Worship committee, is focused on raising awareness of issues concerning racism and its effects on us as individuals, families, communities and on a global level. This year the group reviewed the book; The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander, which examines the issue of mass incarceration of black men and the racial injustices in the judicial system. Members wrote letters to Attorney General Eric Holder, participated in meditation groups in a local jail, and attended a meeting with a former DC Superior Court Judge. Members are working with other local Friends Meetings and Baltimore Yearly Meeting to raise awareness of issues surrounding racism in general and in the judicial system in particular.
